Digital transformation seeks to transform organisations processes for better performance. The changes brought about by such transformations, as others, may not be all welcoming for the organisation’s workforce.

Data published by  Pwc shows that one of the challenges to digital transformation faced by organisations is the struggle with adoption and change agility.

To avoid the failure of such initiatives, organisations need to take a more strategic approach to implement digital transformation in the workplace.

Here are 5 steps that will help employees embrace digital transformation.

Have a Clear Vision

Digital transformations are more about the transformation and less about the technology. Organisations’ leadership needs to be clear on the process/business transformation that is needed. What changes does the organisation want to see? What areas of the organisation need these changes?

Create a Rapport

With a clear vision for a digital transformation, the leadership of organisations now needs to cascade this vision down to stakeholders. Top of the list will be employees. Of cause, employees are key implementers of any change process and a digital transformation process isn’t different.

Communicating and creating a rapport with employees about the desired digital transformation is key to its success. Employees can be resistant to a change that has not been effectively communicated. Beyond communicating the proposed digital changes, leaders need to create an inclusive process where employees’ input influences the digital change(s). Leaders need to dialogue with employees to understand their perspective of the desired changes and what technology they think is most appropriate for such changes.

Invest in Training

The introduction of new technology into an organisation’s processes will directly widen the skills needs of the organisation. Employees will need to develop certain technical and/or soft skills to be able to utilise new technology.

Employees can easily become frustrated when they don’t have the skills needed to fully take advantage of digital changes. Such a situation can easily truncate the effort put into acquiring and deploying technology in the workplace.

The skills needed by employees must be identified and a training programme designed to deliver these skills.

Allow Adaptation

For employees to fully embrace digital changes, they need to start finding their own voice in the changes and take ownership.

Having a culture that supports adaptation will enable employees to take initiatives on deployed technology. This can open up new and better ways of using such technologies beyond what was thought in the classroom.

Conclusion

Organisations can tap into the fast-moving tech world in improving business processes and meeting business needs. To effectively do this, more attention needs to be given to the required changes, showing how they connect to business goals and objectives while developing an inclusive process for adoption and adaptation.
