Cover Letter Writing
Cover letter writing is an art. While there are suggested formats and samples to review, letters can vary widely. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that the job of the cover letter is to get you an interview. It is not a repetition of your resume neither is it your resume, though it should entice the reader to want to read your resume.
The actual writing of the cover letter comes after researching the employer, reviewing and deconstructing the job description, and plugging yourself into the job description, i.e. selecting top areas of the job description where you have solid knowledge, skills and/or experience. Every job application must have its unique cover letter. No single cover letter can be presented to two separate employers.
You have prepared your resume and a concise cover letter, and now you have succeeded in getting an interview. Have you researched the organisation? Have you prepared and practiced typical interview questions and answers? Do you have your own questions ready to ask? That is part of your preparation for interview.
At Rhizome, we’ll provide you with the required tools to have a successful and satisfying interview experience. This includes: appropriate dressing for the interview; how to present yourself to the interview committee/board; how to ensure that you highlight your skills and experience as it relates to the job; and the “don’ts” in an interview. It is important that you get the best out of your interview and we can provide that assurance after a meeting with you.
A resume is a concise summary of your professional experience (work, volunteer, and leadership), education and skills that are relevant to your employment interests. It is a marketing tool used to market YOU. Most often it is used to get an interview or start a conversation with a potential employer.
Rhizome works with you individually and through workshops to help you write and design a professional, targeted document to use for your job and research related career searches. We will advise on how best you can tailor your resume to fit the job you are applying for. Most times, the only way you can get a company to have particular interest in your resume is when you make that resume stand out from the pack. We can help you achieve that.
